The students’ academic orientation regarding their higher education represents a decisive step in their education path.Indeed, a real continuity must be established between the high school and university levels, when comes the importance of preparing a nice transition.

TeMeF anticipates this need by offering its service of Postsecondary Mentoring.

This personalized support is intended to better guide your child regarding his/her future studies in a postsecondary institution (e.i. University).

We found that students finishing their high school years are often confused or even hesitant in defining the path or university branch in which they would like to pursue.

Among those future students, many of them have excellent grades in several disciplines or school subjects but do not know yet how to use them or simply how to exploit them for their future.

Families requesting the TeMeF Postsecondary Mentoring service actually want to receive an expert in counseling that already masters one or many different academic paths that their children are thinking of doing or would like to do.

Indeed, the vast information, often badly organized, that the parents (or students) collected from the Internet, has completely "drowned" them.

The incredible amount of data presented on the university websites, forums, higher education brochures, flyers and postsecondary magazines has truly immersed the student into a deep confusion.

Therefore, the latter doesn’t know where to begin the research. Finally the student becomes overwhelmed by the number of programs, courses and departments that are offered.

To meet this need,
TeMeF comes into play by offering the Postsecondary Mentoring service defined in cycles.

Each cycle includes three main steps:

1st step of the cycle

Information taking at the TeMeF family

Having been chosen and selected due to the exceptional academic background which is mainly related to the student’s need, the TeMeF mentor will go to the family’s home. Then he/she will collect all the questions from the parents, their child and they will mainly be regarding the orientation of the prospective student.

From a well-developed questioning of the TeMeF mentor, the skills, values, interests and dreams of the students will then be well established.
The parents’ viewpoint or their perception regarding their child’s higher education will also be compared to the aspirations of the finishing student.

2nd step of the cycle:

Academic Investigation conducted by the TeMeF mentor

In order to answer the family’s questions and thus eliminating their uncertainties, the TeMeF mentor will undertake an academic investigation during the 2nd step of the cycle.

Therefore the mentor will seek relevant information by browsing into multiple libraries and bookstores. In order to correctly trace the university path of the student, the TeMeF mentor will travel and go to the different universities of the region to receive the right information on the postsecondary education of your child.

The mentor will get to meet different educational staff members of many institutions, contact persons that are likely to clarify the student's academic career such as university teachers, guidance counselors and other faculty members.

The TeMeF mentor will ask for clarification on the content of the programs and disciplines taught in the visited school. The prerequisite information will be collected as well as the necessary conditions for the integration into the university path targeted.

A careful study of the potential resources will be made and an extensive documentation will be extracted from academic brochures, school magazines, professionals’ books and others.

The mentor will attend fairs and presentations held during the opening of various institutes, colleges, engineering colleges or trade schools and other higher educational level schools.

The TeMeF mentor will be using the appropriate tools to determine the geographic areas where the university will be located. Via the internet, he/she will compare the data obtained during the visits of campuses in the region with those provided on the websites of the university faculties located in other towns or provinces. This will allow the TeMeF mentor to constitute a well developed orientation plan.

3rd step of the cycle

Presentation of the Postsecondary Orientation Plan (POP) to the student and his/her family

The orientation plan is simply a summary of the research conducted by the TeMeF mentor. It is the result of the academic investigation.

Once established, this educational assessment is presented to the family. The
TeMeF mentor will develop it in great details, ensuring its proper understanding. This will be a real interaction between the student, his parents and the mentor.

The relevant resources selected by the mentor will also be commented upon and clarified. The strengths of the investigation will be highlighted, allowing the family to see much clearer in the future student’s choice of university courses.

Several programs and courses will be proposed to your child so that a real continuity can be established between the secondary and university level.

An exposure or awareness will also be made with respect to this new way of learning. Indeed, we will focus on the type of this new academic learning such as note taking in lecture halls, organization of courses, requirements for graduation etc.

The
TeMeF Postsecondary Mentoring is therefore an expertise which will also be facilitated by the professional component that Tutoring et Mentoring en Français offers to its customers.
