Henna designs are not tattoos: a tattoo is permanent because the ink pierces the skin, while henna is a temporary dye that is deposited on the surface of the skin.

The art of henna, called mehndi in Hindi and Urdu, has been practiced in Pakistan, India, Africa, and the Middle East for over 5,000 years.

The use of henna became decorative because it was accessible to people of all socioeconomic levels.

It was originally used for its natural cooling properties by people living in hot desert climates. A paste was prepared and the palms of the hands and soles of the feet were dipped in it. It was also used for medicinal purposes.

Today, henna is mainly used to celebrate special occasions (weddings and birthdays) and other joyous gatherings. Henna paste symbolizes good health and prosperity in marriage, and in some cultures, the darker the henna stain, the deeper the love between two individuals.
